Coronavirus disease is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.  The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  However, those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and more will likely to develop serious illness.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it is important that you also practice respiratory etiquette.

Stay informed and protect yourself.  If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue.   For more advise on how to protect yourself, visit the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization is continuously monitoring and responding to this pandemic, for more information on how it Is affecting people worldwide visit World Health Organization.

We are all being exposed to a huge amount of COVID-19 information on a daily basis, and not all of it is reliable.

SOME TIPS FOR TELLING THE DIFFERENT AND STOPPING THE SPREAD OF MISINFORMATION

FACT:  Vitamin and Mineral supplements cannot cure COVID-19
Micronutrients, such as vitamins D and C and Zinc, are critical for a well-functioning immune system, and play a vital role in promoting health and nutritional well-being.  There is currently NO guidance on the use of micronutrient supplements as a treatment of COVID-19.

FACT:  Studies show hydroxychloroquine does not have clinical benefits in treating COVID-19
Hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, a treatment for malaria, lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis, has been under study as a possible treatment for COVID-19. Current data shows that this drug does not reduce deaths among hospitalized COVID-19 patients, nor help people with moderate disease.* The use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine is accepted as generally safe for patients with malaria and autoimmune diseases, but its use where not indicated and without medical supervision can cause serious side effects and should be avoided.

FACT:  People should NOT wear masks while exercising
People should NOT wear masks when exercising, as masks may reduce the ability to breathe comfortably.
Sweat can make the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of microorganisms.  The important preventive measure during exercise is to maintain physical distance of at least one meter from others.

FACT:  Water or swimming does not transmit the COVID-19 virus
The COVID-19 virus does not transmit through water while swimming.  However, the virus spreads between people when someone has close contact with an infected person.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP STOP THE SPREAD?

  • Avoid Crowds
  • Maintain at least a 1-meter distance from others.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Clean your hands frequently.
  • Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue or bent elbow.
  • Stay home if you are not well.
