Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to make a toast at dinner to all the good people and things in your lives.  But why only do these things on a holiday?  It may be a reminder of all those good things, but that outward thankfulness is great ALL YEAR ROUND.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, you, most likely, can’t think about anything else other than taking in all the delicious food and gravy.  However, the day is supposed to be about giving, so let us switch the focus here a bit.

While the Coronavirus Pandemic is still dominating the majority of the news we read, it is equally important to think about the positives.   There are at least six ways that being grateful can actually help you all year, whether it is just a thanks or something more heartfelt.

  1. It has been scientifically proven that giving thanks can improve your physical well-being. According to Forbes magazine, a 2012 study showed that “grateful people” experience fewer aches and pains and they report feeling healthier to.
    1. This could be in part because people who experience gratitude are also more likely to take care of their heath.
  2. Boost your Personal Happiness. One of the unexpected outcomes of expressing gratitude can be that you get something back from it. During this study, a group wrote about things they were grateful for that had happened during the week, while another focused-on things that made them upset.
    1. After 10 weeks, those who wrote about things they were grateful for, were more optimistic and felt better about their lives.
  3. Enhance your Self-Esteem. When you connect with other by giving thanks, you become more in tune with how you feel about yourself.
    1. This may boost performance because higher self-esteem helps you focus on your own abilities, rather than someone else’s.
  4. Did you also know, that giving thanks can reduce the amount of stress in your life?
    1. Being a grateful person helps you to see the good in others, even if they are being difficult, which can be a source of stress for many.
    2. People with a greater level of gratitude tend to have stronger relationships in that they appreciate their loved ones more.
  5. Grateful thoughts can help you get a great night’s sleep. Apparently not saying “thank you “ regularly can actually deprive you of sleep.
    1. Studies show that if you wrote in a gratitude journal for 15 minutes each night, helps ease worries and promotes longer and a better quality of rest.
  6. Empathy is the ability to related to another’s feelings. Grateful people are more likely to behave in a prosocial manner, even when other behave less kind.
    1. Because of this heightened level of empathy, you are less likely to lash out against those who have negativity towards you.

As another chapter of our lives is about to end, it is that time of year when we reflect on what has gone before and what is yet to take flight.  May you take time to reflect upon and acknowledge your accomplishments, your dreams and those who matter most to you in  your life.
